Garage Conversions To Improve Your Home

/ Security Garage Doors & Doors / 0 Comments

One home improvement that we recommend people consider is garage conversions. This can be entire garage conversions or partial. Whatever you choose they are bound to improve your home. Anything from as little as a partial garage conversion will bring improvements to your home.

Think of it this way, garages can be used for storage. It is a great area for that and nothing more. But converting your garage gives it more than one purpose. Even by improving the insulation, you are giving yourself an area that you want to be. Somewhere you want to work on projects.

Garage conversions are amazing for every property. If you still wish to use part of your garage for just storage, a partial garage conversion will be the best for you. Giving you the best of both worlds whilst still adding an improvement to your home.

Different Types of Opening Mechanisms with Garage Doors

/ Security Garage Doors & Doors / 0 Comments

Garage doors are a diverse group of products that have different appearances and different functions that can make them more or less desirable for different people. When it comes to these products, each type of garage door is largely separated by different opening mechanisms. You might be wondering what the importance of the opening mechanism of a garage door is, however this is the most important factor to consider regarding which garage door you should purchase. Not only does the type of opening mechanism determine what the cost of your door is, but it is also an important concern for how the door functions in a meaningful way.

The first and most fundamental issue to concern yourself with regarding your garage door purchase is how much space you have to play with. If you only have a small driveway, something like an up and over door may not be your best option. This is because this product tends to project itself outwardly when it is being opened, which will mean that any vehicle you are trying to place inside the garage will have to be further away from the garage, potentially still posed out on the road. This can make a door that operates on hinges like an up and over door, or even especially a side-opening door, a potential problem. Even if this is not the case, an up and over garage door is also only really suitable for garages that have a lot of headspace, as you should expect the door to take up approximately an extra food of head space. The benefit of this type of door is that they are generally quick and easy to open.

Another type of opening mechanism is a roller door. This type of door is made up of multiple slats that can be rolled up so that they take up minimal space. They can also be designed in such a way that they either roll up horizontally above the entrance to the garage, or to the side of the doorway vertically. Depending on the dimensions of your garage, either option is potentially a good choice. Although roller garage doors can also be a manual operation, these types of garage door much more regularly implement some type of electric door opener, as these type of doors are often heavier.

Electric door openers are an excellent addition that can be added to just about any door, and they are sometimes necessary, depending on the size and weight of your door. Often times, people choose to get heavier duty garage doors, whether they are up and over or roller doors, as they want to get insulated doors so that cars and machinery stored in a garage don’t suffer from freezing temperatures. This can add a lot of weight that can be difficult to operate manually, and therefore an electrical motor system to enable electric door openers are preferable. These are also a great option for those looking for the convenience factor of not having to leave the car every time they enter or leave the garage just to park their car.

Catenary Wire: Types and Uses

/ Lifting Equipment / 0 Comments

Catenary wire can be used in various applications, from domestic commercial and industrial. It has many different uses and can be bought in various different lengths, and as different types of wire as well. Here, learn more about what catenary wire is and what the name means, as well as exploring the different types of wire and what they can be used for.

In simple terms, the word ‘catenary’ simply means the curve that is created when wire (or chain) is supported at either end. It is a broad term for any kind of wire that is assembled like this – it might be used for electrically wired transportation, overhead electricity, light fittings and more. The catenary wire is used to install wire rope overhead and some of the applications in everyday life include Christmas lighting, hanging heavy curtains and suspending heavy power cables. Sometimes it might be installed into masonry or concrete, in which case it might be supplied in a kit form with the required fittings.

Different Types of Catenary Wire

There are two main types of catenary wire you may come across: galvanised catenary cable and stainless steel catenary wire. Here are the key differences to consider so you can purchase the right kind of catenary wire depending on your operations.

When catenary wire is galvanised, what this means is that it has a protective zinc coating that has been applied over the wire. The zinc will provide protection, preventing the wire rope corroding or going rusty over time, especially when used in certain conditions or out of doors. While stainless steel catenary wire will also not rust (it will be naturally resistant due to the material), the zinc will still offer a level of additional protection that can be beneficial. If the equipment and wire is mostly going to be used in an outdoors environment, then galvanised catenary wire might be preferable to give it the best chance of lasting a long time.

In fact, many people tend to use catenary wire out of doors for applications like supporting cables along train tracks, and other kinds of overhead wiring. This means that galvanised wire may be the better option – if you are at all unsure, it is always best to check with the supplier to make sure you will be getting the right kind of wire to meet your needs. Both types of catenary wire should be made from high grade steel, which can be used safely in various internal and external environments, so it is always best to check. Any experienced supplier will have come across these questions many times before and will be able to offer comprehensive advice and talk you through the option. They will also be able to talk to you about how much catenary wire you will need to buy to meet your needs, and they will be able to supply the wire cut to your exact length and specifications where their more standard wire sizes and lengths will not be a suitable fit.

Operating Safely On A Construction Site

/ Blog / 0 Comments

When working on a construction site it is extremely important that everyone is working safely. With construction sites being a common place for minor and life-threatening injuries to occur. That is why today we are going to share with you how you can operate safely on a construction site.

Remember Your Safety Equipment
One of the best ways to ensure your construction site is operating safely is to remember your safety equipment. This safety equipment has been created and designed to keep all construction workers safe. So, no matter how much you may despise wearing it, please do! This equipment could be the difference between life or death when an accident takes place on a construction site.

Remember Safety Training
All workers on your construction site should have the relevant safety training to their name. Everyone needs to have been on a course and this needs to be topped up with every project they complete. If everyone remembers their safety training you will all be following the same regulations, which makes it easier to keep everyone safe.

Only Use What You Are Trained On
When working on a construction site it is easy to get carried away. You can see all of the tools and heavy machinery around the site and get carried away and use what you are not trained on. By doing this you are putting yourself and others at risk of injury. To ensure the construction site is a safe place to work, you should only use the equipment you have been trained on unless you are being supervised by somebody.

Keeping safe on a construction site should be the main priority for all construction workers. So, do not take safety measures on the site lightly. Follow them word for word to ensure a safe working zone.

Managing Noise in Industry

/ Blog / 0 Comments

In an industrial environment, noise can be a serious problem. It can be problematic for staff and could even reach dangerous levels, plus it could cause problems for people in the local area who could end up submitting noise complaints. There are various ways to control noise but usually the best ones are at source, where the solution is mechanical rather than simply masking the source. Of course this will mean the provider of the noise solution needs to be highly experienced. They will have to design a solution specifically for you, to make sure it meets your needs and is adapted to your particular machinery and environment. It is always beneficial to find an experienced provider of noise solutions who can both identify the main causes, and find a solution, encompassing all elements of the process in one. There are excellent solutions to industrial noise – they just need to be adapted to you.

Bespoke Jib Cranes in Warehouses

/ Lifting Equipment / 0 Comments

Jib cranes can be standard, but they are often bespoke, made specifically for the environment where they are going to be used. A tailored jib crane will be made specifically to the requirements of the environment where it is used, so it will usually be a very good fit and will provide maximum output, something that is very important when assessing the cost effectiveness of something like a new jib crane.

Some of the things that can be adapted when a jib crane is bespoke are:

  • Headroom – bespoke cranes can be adapted for environments where space is tight
  • Mounting – it can be freestanding or can be mounted on a wall or post
  • Functionality
  • Lifting capacity

It can therefore be good value for money to get a bespoke jib crane because you won’t be paying for one that has a far higher capacity than you need, or different functionality to what you require.

Appropriate Capacities for Safe Lifting with an Electric Hoist

/ Lifting Equipment / 0 Comments

Using an electric hoist for lifting is the smart way to lift loads in the material handling and lifting industry. A hoist that is electric is a step up from a manual hoist as it will operate with power, so the lift will be less strenuous for the person who is operating the hoist. A lift that is less strenuous is a lift that is safer, so ultimately, using an electric hoist can make lifting a safer process, especially for heavy and bulky loads or one that might be awkward.

While lifting with an electric hoist working within the correct capacity is very important. Lifting equipment such as a hoist comes with a capacity on it for a reason, so if this capacity is exceeded when lifting a load, it can be detrimental. It is very dangerous to do this, which is the main reason why it should never be done, and the load weight and hoist capacity must be understood in full before loading is ever attempted. This is an essential safety process that must be built into lifting and moving loads by anybody who is deemed to be a competent person. Operatives must take responsibility for their own health and safety – employers must provide safe equipment and operatives must use said equipment in a safe way. Building in safety processes is key.

There are three types of electric hoist that can be used for lifting: electric chain hoists, heavy duty electric chain hoists, and electric wire rope hoists. There are various reasons why somebody might want to use one type over another type. Here is a little more information on each of the electric hoist types, including their capacities and how to use them safely.

Electric chain hoists

The maximum capacity for an electric chain hoist is usually around 30 tonnes; this is the safe working load, or SWL. This means that 30 tonnes is the maximum weight that can be lifted safely and this must never be exceeded. They can be used indoors and out to lift a variety of load types in many industries.

Heavy duty electric chain hoists

These will have higher duty ratings, because they are made for more intense use than normal electric chain hoists. They might have a safe working load of around 10 tonnes, rather than the usual 30 tonnes of a normal electric chain hoist.

Electric wire rope hoists

Electric wire rope hoists, on the other hand, might be able to lift loads of around 100 tonnes, depending on the exact specifications and the brand of hoist. This means that they can have a safe working load of around 70 tonnes more than a heavy duty electric chain hoist with maximum lifting load specification. They are generally used for more heavy duty applications due to this ability to lift heavier loads.

With all types of electric hoist, the safe working load will change depending on the brand and model. Always check these before proceeding with a lift – you can never be too safe when working with heavy loads.
